The trip to Shenzhen was both good and bad. The only good were some of the tourist attractions that they have built were quite interesting. The local government is really trying very hard to attract tourists. But in my opinion, it would be better if they could do something about the locals.
It was mentioned that the 治安 there is not very good. In fact, it is one of the worst in the country. Tourists are usual targets for muggers, that does not mean that the locals and Hong Kong visitors who go there are safe, they are equally in danger too. People can get robbed or wallets might be pick-pocketed in public, danger lurks everywhere.
Once, I heard one of my dad's friends (I'll call him A) , who was working there, was walking home with his wife. It was raining heavily that day and they were coming down from this overhead bridge. Out of no where, one mugger just steal his handphone from his handphone pouch which was on his waist. "A" wanted to confront that mugger, but when he turned around, there were 5, 6 muggers standing in front of him. Outnumbered and fearing for their safety, his wife pulls him away and told him to forget about the handphone and just leave.
Another incident also left me with some negative impressions. While arriving at Shenzhen, we had to cross over an overhead bridge. When coming down, some locals will "try to help" you carry your luggage whether you like it or not. One good advice, do not let them carry for you. They will demand that you pay for the "work" they have done, ie, carrying your luggage for you, worst, you might never see your luaggage again.
These incidents and experiences made me felt that it is sure nice that our country is not as bad as that.
